Our Field Trip Recap

A Day, at the Marina; The Ocean Adventure of Bernadette School in Hollywood Florida

Certain field trips have an impact going beyond educational experiences. Recently the students from Bernadette School embarked on such a journey. They had a day at a marina in Hollywood, Florida where they discovered the captivating world of life and had an unexpected encounter with some remarkable construction equipment.

The morning of the trip was filled with anticipation and excitement. As the school bus departed from Bernadette Schools parking lot the childrens voices filled the air with their discussions and eager curiosity. Their destination? An energetic marina that served as both a home to diverse creatures. A gateway to limitless ocean exploration.

Upon arrival at the marina they were warmly welcomed by their guide—a marine biologist—who had brought along captivating props, photographs and interactive tools to enhance their learning experience. The students got a view of different types of marine life; starfish, crabs, seahorses and more. They learned about habitats gained insights into conservation efforts and explored humanitys relationship, with the ocean.

While immersed in their thrilling marine adventure something unexpected caught their attention.
In the distance, a group of workers from Hollywood Marine Construction, was operating machines to rebuild a worn out seawall. The sight of towering cranes, buzzing power tools and busy workers piqued the childrens curiosity.

The tour guide noticed their fascination. Took this opportunity to further their education. She explained how the seawall served as a defense line, against erosion and flooding safeguarding the marina and its surroundings. She also mentioned that seawalls can deteriorate over time and require reconstruction. The students listened attentively their eyes fixed on the machinery in the distance. Seeing these concepts come to life outside of a classroom setting left a lasting impression on them.

What started as a field trip to learn about life unexpectedly turned into a lesson on environmental protection and civil engineering. It served as a reminder that learning doesn’t solely happen within four walls but is intertwined with our lives.

As they said goodbye to the marina and boarded the bus back to school the children were filled with excitement over their knowledge. Their adventure at the marina ignited their curiosity. Deepened their appreciation, for nature, the ocean and even construction.
The visit, to the marina was not an outdoor learning opportunity but it also opened the eyes of the children to how everything, in the world is interconnected.
